Hall History

Willowby Community League started out as Ormsby Place Community League.
Ormsby Place was formed on December 9, 1981 as the result of several meetings at Ormsby Elementary School.
The first meeting of Ormsby Place saw 45 citizens elects an 8 member steering committee.
William Gray was the first president.
At these meetings, citizens decided the neighborhood was in pressing need of a skating rink for the community's youth. The subdivision had already been in existence for three years and people were a bit impatient. A city operating grant was obtained upon the advice of the EFCL. A rink was built next to Ormsby School and opened in January of 1982.
Activities at Ormsby Place were advertised through the Ormsby Orbit. Some of the programs offered were gymnastics, dancing, aerobics, sports, game nights, hockey, soccer and a playschool.
The Ormsby Place Community League changed its name to Willowby Community League in June 1986. They came up with the name of Willowby by combining two neighborhoods of Ormsby and Willowdale together.
The first president of Willowby Community League was Richard Martin. The League built its new hall in 1989/1990. Much of interior work was done by League Volunteers. Planning, legal work and similar services were also donated. The league put resources together to build a $205,000 playground behind the hall in 1994.
Willowby Community League celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2007.

Willowby Community League is made up of three neighborhoods: Ormsby Place, Jamieson Place and Dechene. Ormsby Place was named after A.W. Ormsby. He was also the person who developed Edmonton's grid system of streets. The neighborhood is bounded on the west by Anthony Henday Drive, on the south by Callingwood Road, on the east by 178 Street, and on the north by 69 Avenue.
In the 2005 Municipal Census Ormsby Place had a total population of 5,585 people in 1,934 households.

Jamieson Place was named for Colonel F.C. Jamieson who was an early Edmonton resident. This neighborhood includes the areas of Bridlewood and Hawkstone. The neighborhood is bounded on the west by Anthony Henday Drive, on the north by Callingwood Road, on the east by 184 Street, and on the south be Lessard Road.
In the 2005 Municipal Census Jamieson Place had a population of 4,003 people in 1,288 households.

Dechene was named after Joseph M. Dechene, the father of Judge Andre M. Dechene. The neighborhood is bounded on the north by Callingwood Road, on the east and south east by 178 Street and Lessard Road, and on the west by 184 Street.
In the 2005 Municipal Census Dechene had a population of 1,928 people in 597 households.

**************************************************************************
Therefore Willowby Community league serves a total of 11,516 people in a total of 3,819 households.
**************************************************************************
Willowby offers indoor and outdoor soccer to the children of the community.
We have the largest indoor and outdoor soccer program in the West Zone. We host 14 indoor soccer teams that includes about 200 children and 36 outdoor soccer teams that includes about 530 children.
We offer playschool where we have a three year old and a 4 year old program. Together we teach 28 children yearly and get them prepared for Kindergarten.
We have a playgroup called "Come play with me" which runs twice a week for younger children and their parents.
During the summer months we offer the greenshack playground program at Ormsby Place and Jamieson Place. We also have weekly day camps put on by the City of Edmonton.
We have an outdoor skating rink in the winter and basketball courts, small skateboard park and a playground for the warmer months.
As you can see Willowby is a fairly large community serving a fairly large amount of people and we couldn't do it without our small handful of volunteers.
Thanks very much too all our past, present and future volunteers.
